Terms of Use

The rules for how you can use MJBurrows, and the limits of what we can be held responsible for. Written in plain English where we can, carefully where we must.

1. About these Terms

These Terms of Use explain how you can use MJBurrows (mjburrows.com). By accessing, browsing, or using the site, you agree to them. If you don’t agree, please stop using the site.

These terms apply alongside our Editorial Policy, Methodology, Corrections Policy, Privacy Policy, and Cookie Policy. Together, they form the full agreement between you and MJBurrows.

We may update these terms from time to time. The effective date at the top of this page is always current.

2. What MJBurrows is

MJBurrows is an independent UK personal finance publication written and published by Matthew Burrows. We cover tax, pensions, mortgages, savings, investing, crypto, and the wider UK economy — with calculators, guides, and analysis designed for the people the UK financial system actually affects.

We are not a regulated financial advice firm. We are an editorial publication. Our independence, sourcing, and verification standards are set out in our Editorial Policy.

⚠ Important

3. No financial advice

Nothing on MJBurrows is personal financial advice. Not the articles, not the calculators, not the guides, not the newsletter, not replies to your emails. Everything is published for general information and educational purposes only.

MJBurrows is not authorised or regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) to provide regulated financial advice under the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000. Nothing on this site constitutes an invitation, offer, or solicitation to buy, sell, or deal in any financial instrument, nor is it a personal recommendation.

If you are making a decision about tax, pensions, mortgages, investments, property, crypto, or any other financial matter that affects you personally, you should speak to a qualified professional who is regulated for that activity — an FCA-regulated adviser for investments and pensions, a qualified accountant for tax, an FCA-regulated mortgage broker for mortgages.

Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results. Cryptoassets are high-risk and the value can go down as well as up.

Our full position on this is at our Disclaimer. We mention it here, there, and throughout the site deliberately — because the stakes of getting it wrong are real.

4. Your responsibility

Before acting on anything you read on MJBurrows, you should:

  • Verify numbers, thresholds, and rules against current HMRC, HM Treasury, Bank of England, or other primary-source guidance.
  • Understand how your personal circumstances differ from general examples.
  • Where the stakes are meaningful, consult a regulated professional.

Content reflects UK rules and thresholds at the time of publication or last review. Tax years, reliefs, and regulations change. Our calculators and guides show last-reviewed dates — check these before relying on outputs.

5. Using the site — what you can do

You may:

  • Read, use, and reference MJBurrows content for personal, non-commercial purposes.
  • Link to our pages without asking for permission.
  • Quote short excerpts with clear attribution and a link back, consistent with UK fair dealing under the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988.
  • Share articles on social media.
  • Print or save pages for your own personal reference.
  • Use our calculators to model your own situation.

We welcome genuine engagement — corrections, feedback, story suggestions — at contact@mjburrows.com.

6. Using the site — what you cannot do

You must not:

  • Scrape, crawl, or harvest MJBurrows content at scale without written permission.
  • Use MJBurrows content, calculators, or guides as training data for artificial intelligence or machine-learning models.
  • Republish whole articles, guides, or calculator logic on other websites, in newsletters, or in print — whether commercial or not.
  • Reverse-engineer our calculator formulas to rebuild them elsewhere.
  • Remove or obscure our authorship, attribution, or links.
  • Misrepresent MJBurrows content as coming from a different source.
  • Impersonate Matthew Burrows or any MJBurrows representative in any medium.
  • Use the MJBurrows name, logo, or other brand identity assets without our prior written permission.
  • Use automated tools that place excessive load on our servers.
  • Interact with the site in a way that interferes with other users’ access, breaches security, or violates UK law.

Violation of these terms may result in access being blocked. For copyright or commercial infringement, we reserve the right to take legal action.

7. Intellectual property

All content on MJBurrows — articles, guides, calculator logic, code, design, images (excluding those licensed from third-party sources and credited accordingly), and the MJBurrows brand identity — is owned by Matthew Burrows. It is protected under UK copyright, trade mark, and related intellectual property law.

Where you wish to use content in a way that exceeds fair dealing — commercial republication, syndication, large-quotation use in an academic or professional context — please email contact@mjburrows.com to request permission. We generally grant reasonable requests where attribution is clear and use is aligned with our editorial standards.

8. User-generated content

When you submit content to MJBurrows — through a contact form, email, story suggestion, correction report, or any other channel — you grant MJBurrows a non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to use, reproduce, adapt, and publish that content in connection with the site.

Where we publish reader-submitted content (corrections, letters, story leads), we will attribute by name only with your explicit permission; otherwise we will use “reader”, “anonymous source”, or similar. Do not submit content that is confidential, privileged, or that you are not legally entitled to share.

9. Third-party content and external links

MJBurrows links to third-party sources — HMRC, gov.uk, Bank of England, data providers (Yahoo Finance, Twelve Data, CoinGecko), other publications, academic and professional sources. We provide these links in good faith for reader benefit, but we do not endorse or control the content of external sites.

We are not responsible for the accuracy, availability, or content of any site we link to. Data from third-party providers is subject to their own terms and licences; where relevant, these are noted in our Methodology.

10. Newsletter

The MJBurrows Briefing newsletter is operated via Beehiiv (mjburrowsnews.beehiiv.com). When you subscribe, you are agreeing to Beehiiv’s terms of service in addition to ours.

You can unsubscribe at any time using the link at the bottom of any issue — we will process your removal within 24 hours. We do not sell, share, or trade subscriber information. We use subscriber emails solely to send you the newsletter and occasional site updates.

11. Cookies and privacy

MJBurrows uses essential cookies for site functionality (caching, theme preference) and anonymous analytics cookies to understand how the site is used. Details are at our Cookie Policy.

Our handling of your personal data — including newsletter subscribers and contact form submissions — is set out in our Privacy Policy, aligned with UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018.

12. Affiliate disclosure

MJBurrows does not currently use affiliate links. Our full commercial disclosure is set out in our Editorial Policy.

If affiliate links are introduced in future, they will be disclosed clearly at the point where they appear, and clicking them creates no obligation for you.

13. Accuracy and corrections

We aim to publish content that is accurate, well-sourced, and clearly attributed. Where we get something wrong, we correct it — prominently and promptly, per our Corrections Policy.

If you spot an error, please email contact@mjburrows.com with the URL, the specific claim, and your source for the correction. All reports are read. Accepted corrections are logged publicly, with the affected content updated alongside a change note.

14. Security disclosure

If you discover a security vulnerability on MJBurrows — a bug, an exploit, an unauthorised data exposure, a content injection vector, anything that could compromise the site or its users — please report it privately to contact@mjburrows.com.

We will acknowledge your report within 72 hours and work with you to verify and fix the issue before any public disclosure. We do not currently offer a bug bounty, but we are grateful for responsible security research and will acknowledge researchers (with permission) in any public disclosure.

15. Warranty disclaimer

MJBurrows is provided on an “as-is” and “as-available” basis. We do not warrant that:

  • The site will be uninterrupted, error-free, or secure.
  • The content will always be accurate, complete, or current.
  • The site is suitable for your particular purpose.
  • Any information obtained through the site will meet your expectations.

All content, calculators, and tools are provided for general information only. Your use is at your own discretion and risk.

16. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, MJBurrows and Matthew Burrows shall not be liable to you — whether in contract, tort (including negligence), breach of statutory duty, or otherwise — for any loss, damage, cost, or expense arising from:

  • Your use of or reliance on any MJBurrows content, calculator, guide, or recommendation.
  • Errors, inaccuracies, or omissions in our content.
  • The availability or unavailability of the site.
  • Any actions you take based on information found here.
  • Any third-party content, services, or advice accessed via links from MJBurrows.

This exclusion covers, without limitation: loss of profit, loss of revenue, loss of business, loss of opportunity, loss of anticipated savings, loss of goodwill, loss of data, or any indirect, special, or consequential loss — however caused.

Nothing in these terms excludes liability that cannot be excluded under UK law — including liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, or liability for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation.

Our maximum aggregate liability for any claim related to your use of the site — whether arising from free or paid access — is limited to the amount you have paid to access the specific content in question. For content available without payment, that amount is zero.

17. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless MJBurrows and Matthew Burrows from any claims, liabilities, damages, losses, costs, or expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising from:

  • Your breach of these terms.
  • Your misuse of MJBurrows content, calculators, or guides.
  • Content you submit to MJBurrows that infringes on third-party rights.
  • Your violation of applicable law while using the site.

This obligation survives termination of your use of the site and applies regardless of the cause of the claim.

18. Age and jurisdiction

MJBurrows content covers UK personal finance matters — tax, investments, property, pensions — where the legal and practical context assumes an adult reader. The site is intended for users aged 18 or over.

Our primary audience is UK-based. Content is written with UK rules, thresholds, and regulatory framing in mind. If you access MJBurrows from outside the UK, you remain responsible for complying with any laws in your own jurisdiction.

19. Changes to these Terms

We may update these terms from time to time — to reflect changes in UK law, in our own practices, or in the services we offer.

When we update them, we will change the effective date at the top of this page. Material changes will be noted in The MJBurrows Briefing newsletter where practical. Your continued use of the site after an update constitutes acceptance of the revised terms.

20. Entire agreement, severability, force majeure

These terms, together with our Editorial Policy, Methodology, Corrections Policy, Privacy Policy, and Cookie Policy, constitute the entire agreement between you and MJBurrows regarding your use of the site. They supersede any prior agreements or understandings on this subject.

If any provision of these terms is found by a court or other competent authority to be unenforceable, that provision will be severed from the terms and the remaining provisions will continue in full force.

We are not liable for failure or delay in performance caused by events beyond our reasonable control — internet outages, server failures, third-party service disruptions, or government action.

These terms do not create any partnership, joint venture, employment, or agency relationship between you and MJBurrows. We may transfer or assign our rights and obligations under these terms; you may not transfer yours without our written permission.

Our failure to enforce any provision of these terms at any time shall not be treated as a waiver of that provision or of any other provision. Any waiver must be in writing to be effective.

21. Governing law and contact

These terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of England and Wales. Any dispute arising out of or relating to these terms is subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.
